It All started by wanting to get involved and wanting to make a difference in peoples lives. My family began getting involved and fighting for a cure by spreading awareness to anyone who would listen. First, we got involved with Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) and began by finding ways to raise money to find a cure. In the years to follow, I (Yedit Bereket) became Team Captian of TEAM SELAM and we fundraised to walk in an annual walkathon to find a cure! Selam is such a fighter!! She always says "I may have lupus, but it doesn't have me"
Through the walkathon I met someone who, although had lupus, inspired me to the fullest because of her love for life, her passion for Christ, and her drive to share her story with others. This amazing woman (Kawanna Perine) became Team Captain of TEAM KOOPIE who has been involved with ALR since 2008. Team Koopie did not just stop at walking for a cure, but inspired the community by spreading awareness and creating her own events to raise money for lupus research. Such events included 'Singing for a Cure' and 'Striking Lupus Out' and 'Laughing for a Cure'. Kawanna has literally turned her Misery into Ministry.
On May 15, 2010 TEAM SELAM and TEAM KOOPIE collectively raised $12,484 during the ALR Walking for a Cure Walkathon. It was an inspirational accomplishment that was only achieved with the support of our family, friends, and co-workers as they all came together to support funding research to find a cure for lupus. It was this accomplishment that catapulted us to want to do more.
Later that month, Team Selam joined forces with Team Koopie to form SISTERS AGAINST LUPUS (SAL). We are a non-profit organization directly assisting those who are living with lupus by being an outlet for resources and support, spreading awareness, and raising funds to find a cure.
Together, we will go to battle against lupus and we vow to never stop fighting. SAL's fight will never end beacuase awareness must be spread, every person living with lupus must recieve assistance, and most importantly, a cure must be found. SAL is not only changing lives but helping save them.
