A perfect match: Couple connected by shared kidney

It's not yet Christmas, but one deserving person has already received the gift of a lifetime.

"Oh, I was so happy, I wanted to cry, but I mean, it was just another doctor's appointment," said Shyreka Wallace, 30, describing how she felt when her fiance offered to get tested as a possible kidney donor over the summer.

Wallace suffers from lupus, a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood and kidneys.

Like 40 percent of lupus patients, Wallace developed serious kidney complications after being diagnosed with the disease in 1999 and has needed dialysis three times each week for the past five years.

When her fiance of two years, Erik Worthington, 24, offered to get tested, Wallace knew it was more romantic than realistic.

"It's, like, one in a million for your fiance or your boyfriend to be a match," she said. "More likely, it's your mom or your dad."
